Mencken, H. L.

Mencken, H. L.
Henry Louis Mencken was born in Baltimore, son of a cigar manufacturer. Remembered as a journalist whose cynical style epitomized intellectual attitudes of the first quarter of the 20th century, Mencken and his friend, dramatic critic George Jean Nathan, edited The Smart Set and The American Mercury. Mencken also wrote two unsuccessful plays, The Artist (1912) and He-liogabulus (1920). The character of sarcastic reporter E. K. Hornbeck in Inherit the Wind* (1955) was inspired by Mencken, who covered the famous Stokes "monkey trial" that is recreated in the play.
